Definition of Endorphin (according to MedicineNet.com)

Endorphin: One of the body's own painkillers, an opioid (morphine-like) chemical produced by the body that serves to suppress pain.

Endorphins are manufactured in the brain, spinal cord, and many other parts of the body. They are released in response to neurotransmitters and bind to certain neuron receptors (the same ones that bind opiate medicines). Endorphins act as analgesics (diminishing the perception of pain) and as sedatives.

Chemically, endorphins are peptides (amino acid chains that are shorter than proteins) and they are rapidly inactivated by enzymes called peptidases.

Workouts that are most likely to produce endorphins include, boxing, running, swimming, cross-country skiing, long distance rowing, cycling, hockey, tennis, weight lifting, aerobics, or playing a sport such as soccer, basketball, rugby, lacrosse, Paintball or American football.

What is your connection with EPC?
Volunteer and Board Member. I learned about EPC through a Health Ed class when I was a student at UNM. Sam Slishman was our guest speaker for that day.

What attracted me to EPC is their purpose to help others with substance abuse and alcoholism using a different approach. EPC has allowed me to offer people some answers and help for themselves.
